Japan visa for Ukrainian citizens

Cost note

The short-term visa fee is set by the issuing Japanese mission and is commonly around 3,000 JPY for a single-entry visa; confirm the current fee with the consulate.

What you need

• Valid Ukrainian passport
• Completed visa application form (from the Japanese mission's website)
• One recent colour photograph (4.5 x 4.5 cm)
• Itinerary and proof of onward/return travel
• Proof of accommodation and of sufficient funds
• Additional documents as required by the issuing mission

Why this verdict

Ukraine is not on Japan's visa-exemption list. Ordinary-passport holders must obtain a short-term visa from a Japanese mission before travel: there is no broad self-serve eVisa or visa-free route for Ukrainian citizens, and applications may also be filed at Japanese consulates in nearby EU countries. Japan announced a February 19, 2024 relaxation for certain Ukrainian applicants, but that remains a consular visa facilitation measure rather than a waiver.

Conditional rules

• Full-time employee of a Ukrainian company involved in Japan-Ukraine cooperation projects, or a relative of a Ukrainian evacuee residing in Japan, or a substantially high-income applicant and family member under Japan's February 19, 2024 relaxation Visa required

  Up to 90 days. Eligible applicants may receive facilitated multiple-entry short-term visas, including up to 90 days per visit for the high-income category. This is still a visa route handled by Japanese missions, not visa-free entry and not a general online channel.
